A pioneer in the field of gender dysphoria and differences of sex development
After several decades of invaluable work in the field of gender dysphoria and differences of sex development Prof. dr. Peggy T. Cohen-Kettenis will retire. She started her work in the eighties of the last century with the first Dutch study evaluating the treatment of adult individuals with gender dysphoria.
After that she initiated the first clinic for children and adolescents with gender dysphoria and differences of sex development in Europe at the Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry of the University Medical Center Utrecht. This clinic later moved to the VU University Medical Center and became part of the larger Center of Expertise on Gender Dysphoria, of which she became director. Together with professor Henriette Delemarre-van de Waal, pediatric endocrinologist, she developed a new treatment approach for adolescents with gender dysphoria.
Peggy Cohen-Kettenis participated in the development of the consensus document of the ESPE/LWPES (the European and American Societies for Paediatric Endocrinology) for diagnosis and treatment of Disorders of Sex Development, the Standards of Care for the Health of Transsexual, Transgender, and Gender Nonconforming People of the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH), the Clinical Practice Guideline on the Endocrine Treatment of Transsexuals of the Endocrine Society, and she was the chair of the American Psychiatric Association?s DSM-5 sub-workgroup on Gender Identity Disorders.
She is a member of the ICD-11 working group on the classification of Sexual Disorders and Sexual Health. She published numerous papers on gender dysphoria and received the WPATH?s lifetime scientific achievement award in 2011.
